Charlotte Grayland, AXON I-VI

AXON I-VI

Charlotte Grayland has created six artworks in response to CoDI Grange, the site-specific sound commission for the hospital’s chapel multi-faith space.

Each artwork responds to a particular composer’s sound piece, drawing on the rhythms and ideas of their work, and also informed by the wider context of the chapel, the hospital and Charlotte’s explorations of sound and music, memory and anatomy. The CoDi Grange composers are Jo Thomas, Ashley John Long, Delyth and Angharad Jenkins, Teifi Emerald, Leona Jones and Stacey Blythe.

The title, AXON I-VI, comes from Charlotte’s research into neurons and discovering how the axon – a long, thread-like structure attached to a nerve cell – transmits signals. For her, these works visually transmit the sound works in a translated form.

Mae Charlotte Grayland wedi creu chwe gwaith celf mewn ymateb i CoDI Grange, y comisiwn sain safle-benodol a wnaed mewn cydweithrediad â Thŷ Cerdd ar gyfer gofod aml-ffydd capel yr ysbyty.

Mae pob gwaith celf yn ymateb i ddarn sain cyfansoddwr penodol, gan ddefnyddio rhythmau a syniadau yn eu gwaith, ac maent hefyd yn seiliedig ar gyd-destun ehangach y capel, yr ysbyty ac archwiliadau Charlotte o sain a cherddoriaeth, cof ac anatomeg. Cyfansoddwyr CoDi Grange yw Jo Thomas, Ashley John Long, Delyth ac Angharad Jenkins, Teifi Emerald, Leona Jones a Stacey Blythe.

Daw'r teitl AXON I-VI o ymchwil Charlotte i niwronau, a darganfod sut mae'r axon - strwythur hir, tebyg i edau ynghlwm wrth gell nerf - yn trosglwyddo signalau. Iddi hi, mae'r gweithiau hyn yn trosglwyddo'r gweithiau sain yn weledol, ar ffurf newydd.

It has been really interesting, as an artist who works with sound to work on a project that uses sound as the starting point. I focussed on exploring each work individually and also took inspiration from my own memories, medical drawings, anatomy, and the areas surrounding the hospital.
